Plenum Cabling

Plenum is a concealed empty space in a building and can be found over the ceiling or under the floor. Though it may sound like a secret room, perfect for kids to play in or perhaps ideal for a man cave. Unfortunately Plenum is used for heating, ventilating and air conditioning therefore making it strictly prohibited for any fun activities.

It may not be converted into a recreational room or secret hide out however from a safety perspective, it plays a vital role in providing the accommodations for network and telephone communication via carpeting the data cables; such as the Cat5e (FT4, FT6) or Cat 6 (FT4, FT6) over this hidden space and away from direct reach, making it safe for you and your employees.

As the plenum is able to provide good airflow but its fire barrier are very low, making it easy to catch fire specially with ordinary cables. To reduce the risk of fire and keeping safety concerns in mind, special expanded cables called Plenum Cables were created. These cable are fire resistant and are regulated by the National Fire Protection agency. They are covered with a plastic jacket (usually blue) as an insulator which has been made by fire resistant or low smoke polymers.

Before the installation of Plenum cables they are first tested and then labeled. These cables are tough to burn and when exposed to extreme heat, they don’t release toxic gases. Because of these significant safety features on Plenum cables, they are more expensive than ordinary cables. They provide more safety to you, your family and your employees. Plenum cables consist of both coaxial and twisted pair versions, both providing superior quality.
